Burlington Schools Celebrate National School Lunch Week 2008
October 13-17th

“Guess what I ate today?!”
Local Food from Local Farms

School Lunch Week is a national, annual event established in 1963, to raise awareness of and garner support for the role that school food service and nutrition programs play in the lives of America’s children.

To celebrate School Lunch Week and Burlington Schools’ commitment to high quality, locally-grown, fresh foods in their cafeterias, Burlington Schools Food Service is preparing an ‘all local’ meal made from seasonal produce provided by local farms in our region.  This will be part of an ongoing ‘all local’ meal event served at all Burlington Schools four times throughout the school year.  The first of the seasonal meals will be served for lunch on Wednesday, October 15th as part of School Lunch Week.
Get Local

October 15th Menu
Misty Knoll Chicken – New Haven
Lewis Creek Farm Roasted Red Potatoes – Starksboro
Diggers’ Mirth Salad Greens – Intervale, Burlington
Champlain Orchards Apples – Shoreham
Full Salad Bars at all schools will also incorporate these local products.

The Burlington School Food Project works to educate schoolchildren about the concept of healthy living through healthy eating, and makes connections with local farmers who practice sustainable agriculture. Already this year, Burlington Schools Food Service has processed and/or served over 6,000 lbs. of local produce in the schools’ salad bars and lunch lines, including local basil, broccoli, green beans, strawberries, zucchini, lettuce, mesclun, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and carrots. The produce comes from numerous local farms, including Arethusa Collective, Digger’s Mirth, Healthy City Youth, Intervale Community Farm, Lewis Creek, Mazza’s, and Open Heart.
