FORMER SUPERINTENDENT OF BURLINGTON SCHOOLS
LEAVES CONTRACT; OTHER HIRES MADE

Former Superintendent Lyman Amsden has left his advisor to the School Board position partway through his contract, saving the Burlington School District more than $50,000.

On July 1, 2005, Amsden stepped down as Superintendent, but remained as advisor to the Board and Interim Superintendent Jeanne Collins, who had a dual role as Special Services Coordinator.

Throughout the fall, Amsden worked on specific projects including contract negotiations with three bargaining units; work on capital projects such as the Burlington High School track and Edmunds windows; and developed and assisted the interim superintendent in daily tasks.

In December 2005, Amsden requested a release from his contract as of December 31 to relocate with his family to Florida. In January, he donated some time to help coordinate the final superintendent search but otherwise did not participate in daily district operations.

On January 17, upon completion of a very public search process, the Board appointed Jeanne Collins as superintendent and she has taken over all functions of the district.

With the savings from the release from Amsden's contract, the Board has made a number of hires and appointments:
-- Edmunds Middle School Principal was hired as Special Services Director as of March 1.
-- Edmunds Middle School Assistant Principal Kevin Barber was appointed acting principal at Edmunds Middle School. A search is underway for a new Principal of Edmunds Middle School.
-- Donna Robert was appointed interim assistant principal at Edmunds Middle School for the remainder of the year.

These hires have cost the district less than $10,000 from the funds saved by Amsden's resignation.

Amsden's contract for 2005-06 was structured to be paid in installments. Those installments will be made in future years although the amounts are significantly reduced by the reduced contract amount.
