She replaces Bonnie Poe, who became special services director in March filling the position vacated by now Superintendent Jeanne Collins. The Burlington Board of School Commissioners approved Johnson-Aten's appointment at its Tuesday, May 9, meeting. "Bonnie Johnson-Aten's past experience in Burlington allows her to understand our student population," Collins said. "She will bring passion and energy, a focus on student needs and faculty collaboration." An Edmunds Middle School hiring committee comprised of teachers, staff and parents reviewed candidate resumes, interviewed candidates and visited the finalists' schools. Johnson-Aten, of Montpelier, was Burlington's first diversity-equity coordinator. She held that role from 1997 to 2000 and 2001-02. During the 2000-01 school year, she was the interim assistant to the principal at Edmunds Middle School. Since leaving the Burlington School District, Johnson-Aten was Dean of Students and assistant principal at U-32 High School in Central Vermont from August 2002-June 2005 and has been House Director at Champlain Valley Union High School for the past year. Johnson-Aten holds a bachelor's degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a master's degree in education from Union Institute. |
