Magnet School Presentations at Curriculum Committee Meeting

June 19, 2007

The curriculum committee of the Burlington School Board will meet from 1-4 p.m. on Monday, June 25th at Wheeler Elementary School, to hear presentations about the three magnet school ideas suggested by Superintendent Collins as part of her proposed methods of achieving excellence for all children and socio-economic balance in the city's elementary schools. All magnet schools offer core curriculum, enhanced by an overarching theme. There will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions of the presenters for each proposed magnet theme.

The schedule for the presentations is as follows:
1-2 p.m. International Baccalaureate primary program (a global academics curriculum used in more than one hundred countries).
2-3 p.m. Learning with the Arts (proposal for a school in which core curricular elements are supplemented using drama, music and visual arts as a means of engagement and deep learning submitted by the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and St. Michael's College).
3-4 p.m. Sustainable Schools (proposal for a school with a curricular theme on environment, community, and global studies submitted by Shelburne Farms and the Burlington Legacy project).

Each presenter will spend 20-30 minutes explaining their concept of a magnet, and then answer questions from the curriculum committee members and any other Board or community members who attend. This event will be videotaped by RETN, shown on the local cable access channel, and put onto the web as a "streaming" video. The public is welcome to attend, ask questions, and provide feedback to the committee.
