School Assignment Policy

The Board of School Commissioners is considering a policy in school assignments to bring the current practice that is under resolution up to date in policy. This policy stems from the 2008 resolution on the creation of Magnet Schools.

August 2nd Special Election for Ward 5 School Commissioner

Due to the resignation of Commissioner Amy Werbel, a special election will be held in Ward 5 on Tuesday, August 2. Candidates must have their petition to the City Clerk's office by 5 pm on June 27.

Burlington Positive Behavior Supports

BSD will be holding it's first annual PBIS Administrator Academy on August 15h. Howard Muscott, Director at NH Center for Effective Behavior Interventions and Supports, will be presenting. Mr. Muscott is a nationally recognized speaker who has presented worldwide on every aspect of PBIS and it's implementation. Factfinding Report Released

School Board and Teachers Reach Tentative Settlement
June 1, 2011
After a mediation session that commenced at 11 am and continued until 1 am today, a tentative agreement was reached between the negotiating committees for the Board and the Burlington Education Association as to a replacement contract for the contract that expired Aug 31, 2010. This tentative agreement is subject to ratification by the membership of the BEA and by the School Board. By agreement of the negotiating committees, the terms of the tentative agreement will not be publicly disclosed until the agreement has been ratified by both parties. The details will be presented to the Board members and association members in executive session at the first opportunity.

Trevor Christopher to be new IAA Principal
April 27, 2011
The Burlington Board of School Commissioners has appointed Trevor D. Christopher to be the new principal at the Integrated Arts Academy at H.O. Wheeler Elementary School effective July 1, 2011. Mr. Christopher was chosen following an extensive nation wide search and inclusive search process which included parents, teachers, and administrator involvement. He replaces Brian Williams, the Interim Principal of IAA who served for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Burlington Board of School Commissioners appointed Brian Williams as Interim Principal of the Sustainability Academy at Lawrence Barnes Elementary School effective July 1, 2011. Brian is currently the Interim Principal at the Integrated Arts Academy at HO Wheeler Elementary School and has previously been Assistant Principal at Burlington High School

EMS Student Places in Statewide Essay Contest
April 26, 2011
Nathan Treadway (EMS) placed as one of the top three winners around Vermont for the Hildene Essay Contest and will read his essay out loud at the Lincoln Family Home on May 22nd. Guided by Carole Renca, EMS Librarian, students met in the library weekly to discuss the Lincoln and Douglas Peoria speeches, Lincoln's ideas as well as to fine-tune their essays.

Estimated Tax Information Updated

The FY12 Net Education Tax Amounts table has been updated on February 23rd by the State Department of Education to reflect the latest changes to income sensitivity calculations. The table in the Annual Report was based on estimated information available at the time of printing. Please use this new table when determining your net education tax amounts.

BHS Students Win Stock Market Competition

Felix Keydel and Mien Chau of BHS were officially recognized this week by the Vermont Council on Economic Education. The BHS students won in the Vermont high school division of the national Stock Market Game which helps teach economic reasoning and financial literacy.

Burlington Students Share Musical Talents
December 13, 2010
Student compositions and performances have taken center stage thanks to a number of successful partnerships between our music teachers and the Vermont Midi Project. Grammy-winning eighth blackbird selected several Burlington student compositions to perform at a special event. The Vermont Symphony Orchestra performed a song written by a class at the Integrated Arts Academy and arranged by Burlington secondary school students. Almost 25% of the compositions selected for Opus 21 by the Vermont Midi project were created by Burlington middle and high school student composers.

Students Host Political Forum

4th and 5th graders at the Sustainabilty Academy will ask elected officials questions about quality of life. Parental Safety Alert

There have been two reports of a male engaging in conversation with our students on route to Edmunds. The police have been notified and an investigation is being conducted.
Parents are asked to remind their children to follow safety cautions by not engaging in conversations with strangers and to report to their parents when situations such as this occur.

Parent Involvement Update

Throughout the district, we are committed to strengthening our partnership with parents to support the success of all of our students. Today, I'd like to share with you our progress and planning for parent involvement. In every school, we have a number of initiatives underway to reach this goal. Each school has a full roster of events to empower parents to be involved in their children's education and to build community.
This year, we are working to put in place some tools suggested through parent input and research. We are also recommending a new model to link parent involvement with student achievement and school improvement.

Burlington Schools Financial Update
August 26, 2010
Michael Gilbar, Burlington's new Business Manager, issued a year-end report indicating a surplus of $509,257 for the fiscal year 2010. While our accounting for the year is not yet audited and some closing entries are yet to be completed, we're pleased that the cost controls and review systems we've put in place have been effective. Although we are still carrying forward the adjusted prior year deficit, our revenue for FY 2010 exceeded our expenses. Audited financials will be available in the spring of 2011.

Key Factors in Parent Involvement

We gained important information about parent involvement from research conducted last fall as part of our grant funding for the magnet academies. (See "Parents Positive about Academies"). The research showed that:

In the Fall 2009, we conducted research to help us to better understand and improve parent involvement in all of our elementary schools AND to understand more about perceptions of our new academies in their first year. This research was required as part of our grant funding for the academies and was paid for by grant funding.
