2009 Burlington Schools' Award Recipients Honored
Robin Dimmick, the District's Special Education Liaison who follows students who are currently in out-of-district placements, was honored in 2009 by the Vermont Council of Special Education Administrators for her work with special needs students.
Kathy Olwell, Afterschool Coordinator at Hunt Middle School and Director of Sara Holbrook's New North End Youth Center recieved one of three Vermont Department of Education awards for youth leadership in 2008-2009.
Chris Giard, Director of Property Services, has been named as one of three Vermont Semi-Finalists for the 2009 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The award is the U.S. Government's highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.
Amy Mellencamp received the 2008-2009 Outstanding Service Award from Linking Learning to Life.
Burlington Schools Food Service received the 2008-2009 Outstanding Community Partnership award from Linking Learning to Life.
Nancy Zahniser, former Champlain and Barnes Principal, and Patrick Brown, Director of the Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center, received the 2009 Champions of Diversity & Equity Lifetime Achievement Awards.
2009 Champions of Diversity & Equity Award recipients also included BHS Student Nicole Murphy, Hunt Middle School Art Teacher Joy Kipp, Champlain Elementary School parent Michael Wood-Lewis, Reading-to-End-Racism Coordinator Denise Dunbar and Bilingual/BiCultural Home-School Liaison Nimo Girreh.
Colleen Cowell of Champlain Elementary, received the 2009 Governor's Heritage Awards for Outstanding Educator.
Superintendent Jeanne Collins received the 2009 Distinguished Educator Award from the UVM Department of Education.
Brian Williams, BHS Assistant Principal received the 1st Annual DG Weaver Award from the Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community.
Brent Sclafani, Chaska Richardson and Betsy Greene of Champlain Elementary received a 2009 Neighborhood Night of Success Award.
Champlain Elementary School (Nimo Girreh and Chaska Richardson) and Saint Michael's College received a 2009 Campus/Community Partnership Award for service-learning projects.
