Clinic Goals:  To provide dental services to Burlington students who otherwise would not receive them. Having a dental clinic in our school means kids have easier access to dental care.

Why in the Burlington schools?  According to the U.S. Surgeon General, tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease.  More than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illnesses.  In the past, dental issues have hurt Burlington students’ school attendance and, therefore, academic performance.

Who can be served?  The Wheeler clinic can provide about 750 students with two dental checkups per year.  Those who are uninsured or insured by Medicaid or Dr. Dynasaur can get services either at the Wheeler clinic (students in Grades K-8) or at Community Health Center of Burlington.

How does it work?  The Wheeler clinic is open from noon to 4 p.m.  Interpreters are available to translate for children and parents who do not speak English.  If parents are unavailable, transportation between the student’s home school and the clinic can be provided by Medicaid.

Who paid for the clinic?  This clinic is modeled on a similar clinic at the Molly Stark School in Bennington. U.S. Rep. Bernie Sanders was able to get $100,000 to renovate the former school space and buy equipment for the Burlington clinic, and the School District recruited the Community Health Center of Burlington to operate the clinic.  Community Health Center donors contributed an additional $35,000 to cover costs.
