Elements

This three-year, $5.6 million project is funded by the United States Departments of Education, Justice and Health and Human Services.  It requires a focus on 6 different elements.

Element 1: School Safety

  • Crisis response training for District including support staff and funds to state a District-wide practice session.

  • Security lighting, security cameras, new windows, other safety improvements

Element 2: Prevention - Early Intervention

  • 1.0 FTE Student Prevention Coordinator

  • Know Your Body curriculum for elementary schools - $249/grade for PreK - 5th grade at all 6 schools

  • Middle school materials for existing curriculum - $3,500

  • Best practice high school curriculum - $15,000

  • Parent Skill Training: Nurturing Parents and Strengthening Families - $40,400

Element 3: Mental Health

  • 6.0 FTE Behavioral Specialists

  • 4.0 FTE Social Workers (through collaboration with the Baird Center)

  • 0.1 FTE Psychiatrist (through collaboration with the Baird Center)

  • 0.8 FTE Psychologist (through collaboration with the Baird Center)

Element 4: Early Childhood

  • Prenatal and infancy visits to high-risk families (through collaboration with Visiting Nurse Association)

  • Social work services for children in Early Essential Education, Burlington Schools preschool and other early education programs (through collaboration with Visiting Nurse Association)

Element 5: Education Reform

  • After-school programming support

  • 9.0 FTE to support alternative programs for middle and high school (3.0 FTE special educator, 3.0 FTE outreach workers and 3.0 paraeducators - modeled in part on the vocRehab model at High School)

  • Ready, Set, Work! summer transition program at High School and new middle school transition program (through collaboration with Linking Learning to Life and Burlington Community Schools Project)

  • Research for Better Teaching (3 schools/year at $38,000/year)

  • Responsive Classroom ($6,000 to train more trainers)

Element 6: Safe School Policies

  • 2.8 FTE for continued truancy program  

  • Parent education in supporting school success

  • 1.0 Student data clerk

  • Bullying Prevention Program

  • Search Institute Survey
