Truancy Prevention Project

Information for Parents

Several people are responsible for making sure that children attend school. Listed below are all the parties involved in the truancy process, and their respective responsibilities.

  • Parents or guardians will notify the school in writing in advance of a student's absence, whenever possible.
  • School principals or attendance officers will determine if the absence is valid and will attempt to contact a parent or guardian by telephone to confirm the cause of the absence. An absence will be considered unexcused unless the school hears from the parent. Any inability of the school's attendance officer or his/her designee to reach the parent does not alter the absence being unexcused.
  • Building administrators will be notified daily of student absences.
  • Schools will document the total absences for each student each year. A high number of absences will have consequences, which are outlined in the flowchart of the Truancy Process. Click the hyperlink on the right to view this flowchart.
