The ONTOP Satellite operates at Burlington High School.  It is for students in grades 9-12 who need more support to succeed in this type of mainstream educational environment; at present we serve 12 students.  The Satellite was established in 1999 to meet the needs of students transitioning from ONTOP to Burlington High School.  It has developed into a program that serves students transitioning from various alternative schools (including ONTOP) and students who are having difficulty succeeding in this educational environment.  The majority of students who attend the Satellite are eligible for special education services; however, it is not limited to special education students.  Our goal for the students in the Satellite is for them to earn credits toward their high school diploma, and to develop the skills necessary to survive in this educational environment without the level of support provided by us.

We support the students in the Satellite through an intensive case management system.  They are all enrolled in mainstream classes; their supported study halls are held in the Satellite classrooms.  Satellite staff monitors student progress in mainstream classes through daily contact with their mainstream teachers.  This allows us to stay current on assignments that need to be completed an any individual issues that need to be addressed.  In the supported study hall students have the opportunity to complete assigned work, get make-up work completed, and prepare for upcoming classes.  This also is the time that students have an opportunity to work on their social skills, at the Satellite this is usually done in individual sessions.

As at ONTOP, students and their families and/or support people are required to attend a Home Conference meeting.  These meetings are held every two to three weeks.  The team discusses the student's academic performance and behavior in school.  This is an opportunity to problem solve issues before they affect the student's school performance.  It is also an important part of the program since it promotes close communication between school and home.
