Art I : September - October
During the first six weeks of class you will be introduced to a wide variety of drawing exercises as well as drawing tools. The end goal being a personal comfort level with drawing to express your ideas. To have success you need to approach these exercises with an open mind and a willingness to try. If you give an honest effort you will see improvement in your basic drawing ability. Drawing skills are the foundation on which Art I, Art II, and Art III are built.
Clay Arts : September – October
We will be practicing basic forming techniques including pinch, coil and slab as well as learning how to fuse clay together so that seams are strong. Basic glazing techniques will also be introduced so that work may be fired to a maturing temperature and taken home. Discussion of the kiln and how it works will also take place before the first firing. As always, good studio etiquette is expected. You need to be responsible for properly storing your projects and cleaning up after yourselves.
Art I : October - November
We will spend the next six weeks developing a basic understanding of the use of colored pencils, watercolor pencils, india ink, and water color paint. We will use a wide variety of organic forms as subject matter. This is done as preparation for doing a large still life assignment in late November.
Clay Arts : October - November
We will be a working on three basic slab construction projects ; the mug and cover jar with handle, the slab box with coil insets, and the shoe sculpture. Please remember that it takes focus effort not to get behind on these projects so you should plan on coming into the studio some during your free time. You will also be responsible for keeping your clay supply wedged and glazing and staining your work as it comes out of the firings.
