Congratulations to our Champlain Elementary School Vt Midi Project Composers

June 16, 2008
Champlain students Bastien Gliech ("The Mix of Strings") and Eileen Kocherlakota ("The Race") had their original compositions selected for Opus 16, the Vermont MIDI Project celebration of exemplary work statewide. Also,congratulations to Oliver Marchildon for the submission of his compostion entitled "Rewind". MIDI means Musical Instrument Digital Interface and Betsy Greene, our music teacher, teaches an after school program where students can further develop their music compositional skills outside of music class. Champlain Elementary School Chorus Invited to Burlington's Discover Jazz Festival

The Champlain Elementary School 4th and 5th Grade Chorus, under the directorship of our music teacher, Betsy Greene, earned the honor of performing at the Discover Jazz Festival, Tuesday, June 3rd at City Hall Stage on the Market Place. Singing the blues to dixieland to swing, children improvised on xylophones and scat sang to classics like "Duke's Place" or "C Jam Blues" by Duke Ellington. It was a day to remember. Hunt Middle School Rich Amato Receives Award

Changes Ahead for Burlington Afterschool

Changes are planned for the 2008-2009 Burlington Afterschool Program in our elementary schools. Jeff Fournier, Afterschool Director, is attending informational meetings at every elementary school.

Burlington High School selected to host 2009 New England Track and Field Championships

The New England Council of Athletic Championships named Burlington High School on Monday as the host site of the New England Track and Field Outdoor Championships in June of 2009.Read More

District of Excellence Renovation Project

The Burlington School District now seeks an architectural firm to work with and build upon the facilities audit and Master Plan that DeJong.Locker will complete by June 30. The architectural firm will develop an overall architectural design, bidding documents for contractors, consultation with school site based committees, coordination of all local and state building approvals and permits, and review of construction in progress to final punch list and project completion.Read RFQ (.pdf)

Last Day of School

March 12, 2008
Students will attend school June 12 full day and June 13 half day to make up for the snow days earlier this year. High school graduation will be at 10am the morning of June 13. Middle School graduations will be June 12th, check with your school for the time.

SISTER SCHOOLS and VARIANCES

The Burlington school board and administration have made a commitment to keep class sizes low, with an emphasis on smaller primary class sizes. To do this, we have created a "sister school" model designed to give us flexibility. Sister schools are two Burlington schools who "share" a region of the city and work together to balance class sizes.Read More

Burlington Fire Department seeks information on Feb. 6 fire at BHS

BUDGET TIME IS HERE!

The Board is interested in soliciting community input into the budget decisions for the 08-09 school year. The baseline budget is up by 1.4% new money. There are additional considerations to be decided by the Board at their meeting on Jan. 15, at Hunt Middle School Library, 7 P.M. ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT PARENT SCHOOL SURVEY

We continue to move forward in our Excellence & Equity Planning Process. Over the next three weeks, parents of elementary students and pre-schoolers are being surveyed by phone to learn more about how they define excellence in our schools and to better understand the potential for magnet schools. This survey is being conducted by Fifth Element, an independent research group based in Colchester, Vermont. Approximately one-third of our elementary school parents will be surveyed. This weekend, RETN Channel 16 will air programs featuring elementary classes at Flynn, Edmunds Middle, Champlain, Barnes and Edmunds Elementary Schools. In partnership the Flynn Center for Performing Arts "Words Come Alive" teaching artists, students in kindergaren through 6th grade use drama and movement to learn about the rainforest, lifecycles, ecosystems and the American Revolution. This Sunday, November 11th, American Flatbread Burlington Hearth will donate $8 from every flatbread (dining room or takeout) to the Burlington School Food Project. The Burlington School Food Project's work to increase high-quality, locally grown foods, provide nutrition education and connect farms to schools has been in the local and national news. PRESS RELEASE FROM JEANNE COLLINS, SUPERINTENDENT

On Thursday 9/20 at 7:00 AM C.P. Smith Elementary School received word that a water main had broken. We are asking that parents who are able to, please keep their children at home. There will be no water available for the day at Smith.
The school will be open for those children who have no other option.
The school will reopen on September 21, 2007.
Smith Curriculum Night on Sept. 20 is also cancelled.
